Ghirardelli Class Action Settlement October 2014: Up To $24 Back On Purchases

Have you purchased Ghirardelli chocolate anytime from August 17, 2008 and August 18, 2014?

If so, you're eligible to receive up to $24 back against your purchases of select bars, bags, or baking chips, as part of a recently settled class action lawsuit.

Ghirardelli this week agreed to pay out $5.2 million to address class action claims of deceptive advertising, including the specific claim that the Ghirardelli Classic White Baking Chips were labeled as 'chocolate' (see the photo above) despite having no actual chocolate in the ingredients.

In addition, the class action lawsuit alleged that the claims of 'all-natural' were deceptive, as many of the products included artificial ingredients.  Ghirardelli admits no wrong-doing by settling the suit.

Here's just a partial list of Ghirardelli products covered in the settlement:

  • Gourmet 100% Unsweetened Baking Chocolate Chips
  • Gourmet Milk Chocolate Sea Salt & Almonds
  • Intense Dark Chocolate Midnight Reverie 86% Cocoa
  • Intense Dark Chocolate Twilight Delight 72% Cocoa
  • Premium Baking Bar - Milk Chocolate
  • Premium Baking Chips - Classic White Chips
  • Premium Baking Cocoa - Unsweetened Cocoa

No proof of purchase is necessary to obtain settlement benefits, but if you have proof of purchase, you can claim up to 100% costs.  Without proof, you will be capped at a maximum claim of $24.  The filing deadline for your claims is March 19, 2015.

As I mentioned in my recent post about the Red Bull settlement, I've noticed a pattern of companies putting their products on steep discounts after settling a class action lawsuit.

So I bet if we watch closely, we will see coupons, sales, or rebates available for Ghirardelli products in the near future!
