ABC News reported this morning that a Japanese chemical plant operated by the Nippon Shokubai Company was rocked by multiple explosions over the weekend. The blasts killed one firefighter and injured over 30 other first responders.
The Japanese plant produced 20% of the world's supply of acrylic acid, which is an important ingredient in disposable diapers, and supplied major diaper producers like Proctor & Gamble.
Acrylic acid is used to create superabsorbent polymers, which are what catches and contains liquid in a diaper and prevents leaking.
With this plant offline, it's possible that diaper prices will go up substantially over the next several months, especially if there is a global shortage of disposable diapers.
So it might be a good idea to start stockpiling diapers now, especially if your family has multiple children in diapers or training pants. My recommendation is to snag any sales that work out to 20 cents per diaper or less.
Or now might be the time to make a switch to cloth diapers, which are of course substantially cheaper to begin with.

My second thought was, "wow, a chemical plant should really NOT be linked to diapers!". Why do we think this is okay to put on our babies?
