How Walgreens Balance Rewards Work

Have you signed up for your free Walgreens Balance Rewards loyalty card yet?

The program launches on Sunday, September 16, and you'll be able to earn points on pretty much everything you buy in store, excluding some basic stuff like alcohol, lottery tickets, and cigarettes.

Then as you earn those points, you can convert them into coupons to purchase more of whatever you want to buy in the store!

Here's how the points to dollars will break down, courtesy of Erica from i heart wags:

  • 5,000 points = $5
  • 10,000 points = $10
  • 18,000 points = $20
  • 30,000 points = $35
  • 40,000 points = $50
And it looks like Walgreens will be promoting the program by offering bonus Rewards points on select sale items each week.

Here's an example taken from the September 16 ad:
  • Children's Benadryl and Zyrtec -- Spend $30 or more and receive an extra 10,000 Balance Rewards points (which is like $10 in bounceback money.)
  • Children's Benadryl is on sale for $4.99, and 45-count bottles of Zyrtec are on sale for $26.99.  So your pre-coupon price is $31.98, which qualifies you for the 10,000 points.
  • Use this $1 off Children's Benadryl coupon, along with the $7 off Zyrtec coupon arriving in the 9/16 Red Plum insert.
  • You'll pay $23.98 out of pocket after coupons, then score your 10,000 points.  So that's a final price of $13.98 for both the Zyrtec and the Benadryl.
  • That's a great price considering the 25-count bottles of Zyrtec can be between $18 and $20 at most grocery stores!
It also looks like the Walgreens Balance Rewards card will entitle shoppers to lower sale prices on select advertised items -- so be sure to sign up for yours before the program goes live on September 16!
