How To Apply For Pet Food Stamps

how to get pet food stamps
If you're struggling to put food on the table for your family, take heart -- you no longer have to choose between feeding your kids and your pets.

A new non-profit called Pet Food Stamps has launched, and it's just what you think -- it helps folks who receive government assistance pay for pet food, rather than surrendering much-loved pets to a high-kill animal shelter.

Here's how the program works:
Pet Food Stamps collects donations from individuals and corporations, then allows needy families to apply for monthly grants.

Families must show proof that they are receiving government assistance in order to be eligible for the program.

Once approved, a family will receive a monthly allotment to spend on pet food and supplies at PetFoodDirect.com.  The program covers dogs and cats, along with some smaller animals and reptiles.

There's no word yet whether you can stack coupon codes at PetFoodDirect with your monthly allotment to stretch it further, but minimally you could go through Ebates to get an extra 4.5% cash back on your purchase.

The program has had over 12,000 requests for assistance since it launched just two weeks ago.  As you can imagine, they are actively looking for donations to assist all the families who are currently applying.

Although Pet Food Stamps is a national program, San Antonio residents who need help with pet food can also receive assistance through DaisyCares.  DaisyCares works in conjunction with the San Antonio Food Bank to distribute emergency pet food assistance to needy families.  Learn more about the DaisyCares Pet Food program here.

Don't forget pet owners can also currently score a free bag of cat litter on Amazon right now!

  3. Thank you for this. At the animal hospital where I worked, some of our clients were fixed-income elderly or disabled and would deprive themselves so they could feed and care for their pets. It would be wonderful to share a resource like this with them, and would be a great cause to donate to. Pets provide invaluable nonjudgemental complanionship to people who are having hard times. It is wonderful to provide a means for them to remain in a loving home.
