Christmas Budgeting Tip: Save Money By Clearing Your Browser Cookies

Did you know companies will charge you less money to shop online if they think you are a new customer to their site?

The Consumerist has a great post today showing how a reader was charged one price to rent a car on Hotwire, when the site knew he was a returning visitor -- and a much lower price when the site thought the reader was a new shopper!

The difference was pretty staggering, actually.  A 'new' customer on Hotwire was offered a standard-size car rental for $27.95 per day, while the rate for a returning shopper was a whopping $48.95 per day.

So how do you tell a site that you're a new visitor, in order to get the best deals?  It's simple -- clear your browsing history.

When you clear out your browser history, you erase all the cookies websites leave in your computer to track your progress around the internet.

So when you go onto a site and have no cookies, the site thinks you're a brand-new shopper, and offers you special values in order to secure your new business!

Stack this trick with coupon codes and shop on big sales days -- like Cyber Monday -- and you'll really start saving some money on your Christmas gift list!

If you've never cleared the cookies in your browser before, you can check out the easy tutorial on WikiHow showing you how.
