Does Kohl's mark up prices before a sale?

A CBS hidden-camera investigation is alleging that national discounter Kohl's was busted marking up prices by up to $100 before putting them on sale, in an attempt to make their discounts seem more tempting to customers.

The Sacramento CBS affiliate tracked sale prices in Kohl's stores in California between November 2011 and January 2012, and apparently found several instances where more expensive prices were stickered over a lower original price.

For example, the TV station found a twin sheet set on sale for 50% off an 'original' price of $89.99 -- so $44.99.  But when  they removed the sheets from the packaging, they found an older price tag inside with a price of $49.99.  Instead of saving 50%, the sheets were really only $5 lower than the original price!

Have you ever seen this in your stores?  I have bought many things from Kohl's over the years with multiple layers of sales stickers on a tag, and I always just assumed those prices went down as a sale progressed.  Now I'll definitely be looking more carefully -- and suddenly the new JCPenney Fair and Square pricing strategy seems more appealing!

  1. I was in Kohl's today looking at shoes. The original price read 59.99 and the electronic 'sales' price read 64.99! Now that's a deal!

  2. I just figured out that I just paid $2 over retail for a toy that was marked 40% off there. I'm never going to Kohls again! I don't appreciate getting scammed.
